Make restaurant links say where they lead

A page with several buttons saying learn more or click here leaves guests to infer the destination.

01

The decision this workflow supports

A page with several buttons saying learn more or click here leaves guests to infer the destination. Restaurant visitors may need to distinguish a menu download, an event inquiry and an external ordering site quickly.

02

Put the review process in place

Name each link for its purpose and destination. Identify downloads where useful and explain when the visitor will leave for the approved ordering service. Review repeated links together so the same label does not point to unrelated tasks.

03

Worked example for your team

A fictional homepage has three identical More buttons below cards for the menu, catering and ordering. Review the links without the surrounding images. Their purposes become unclear. Replace the labels with specific actions and check the destinations again, including the external ordering site. The catering link should say inquiry when it leads to a request form. Ask a colleague which action they would choose to place an order and which to ask about an event. A clear distinction reduces dependence on visual context and avoids misleading booking language.

04

Sample wording to approve

“Editorial examples: Read the dining menu, Send a catering inquiry, and Open our official ordering site. The inquiry link should not be labeled Book now when staff must still confirm the arrangement.” This wording is a draft for the restaurant owner to approve before use.

05

Fields for the staff handoff

Staff need link text, actual destination, task supported, external or download context, and page owner. Mark uncertain details explicitly and keep the requested action separate from anything restaurant staff have already confirmed.

06

Acceptance tests before use

A tester can predict each destination from its label. Inquiry links do not promise confirmation. The menu and ordering links are clearly different actions. Record the observed result, assign any mismatch, and repeat the affected scenario after correction.
